The closer you get to the race day, the less running you should do… that’s the irony of marathon training. You’ve most likely completed your hardest weeks if you’re preparing for the Zinc City Half Marathon. The next part that most runners miss out on is the Taper. One of the last parts of the competition and a big day, it feels unexpected to slow down, but this is what makes weeks and weeks of grinding into a strong and confident finish.
Let’s go through the last three weeks step by step to get you feeling fresh on the start line, not fatigued.
Week 1: Begin the Wind-Down
After 3 weeks, most of your training stress has been recovered. This week, it’s about preserving what you’ve achieved, not challenging it.
- Reduce your total mileage by about 20-25%.
- Keep your long run, but shorten it to roughly 75-80% of your recent longest distance.
- Include one short session at goal race pace to stay familiar with that effort level.
- Switch strength training to lighter, bodyweight-based movements.
- Focus on sleep, hydration, and balanced meals with enough protein and carbs.
This isn’t laziness; it’s giving your muscles a break so they can recover and regenerate more powerfully. Consider it as storing the energy for the coming weeks.
Week 2: Narrow the Focus
This week is a mental challenge for runners rather than physical. Although training a bit less can make you feel like you are still up to speed, don’t hesitate to stick to the plan.
- Trim mileage another 20-30% compared to last week.
- Bring your long run down to somewhere between 8 and 10 km.
- Keep a couple of brief, controlled speed workouts, staying light on volume.
- Sort out logistics early — course details, transportation, and your exact start time.
- Make sure your gear has already been tested: shoes, clothing, hydration gear, everything.
At events such as Vedanta Zinc City, a lot of people have a problem not with fitness itself but because they change one thing at the last moment—their shoes, what they eat, or the route. Continue with what has been successful during training.
This week, you’ll likely feel unusually sleepy or demotivated, even though you aren’t working as much. It is your body adjusting and not a warning sign. Give it time.

Week 3: The Final Countdown
Race week is for one purpose: to arrive fresh. Don’t let any temptation to “test” your fitness one last time get the better of you.
- Cut mileage down to about 40-50% of your peak training week.
- Keep the majority of your runs short, slow, and comfortable.
- Add a few quick strides at race pace two to three days before the event.
- Eliminate or drastically reduce strength training.
- Eat foods you’re familiar with – this is not the week to try something different.
- Gradually increase carbohydrate intake two to three days out to fuel up properly
Prepare your race clothes and equipment a day or two ahead of time, double-check the race start time, and organize your morning so you don’t have a last-minute rush.
On Race Day
This last bit is not the time to do hard work; it’s about protecting it, so by now the work is done. The Zinc City Half Marathon is the first time you’re running it or the 10th; showing up on top of the game will get you further than another training session would at this point.
Have confidence in your training and preparation, have confidence in the taper, have confidence in your body. Cross the finish line as you practiced: strong, steady, and ready.
